Assam celebrates the festival of Kali Puja in a grand way and it is celebrated to seek blessings from the Goddess for protecting the people against drought and war, for
general happiness, health, wealth, and peace. This festival coincides with Diwali and n this occasion, when the entire nation worships Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha; Assam, Bengal and Orissa worships mother Goddess Kali. This diversity in Indian culture is completely incredible. If we turn around the pages of Indian history, the celebration of this
puja started only in the 18th century by Raja Krishnachandra, the King
of Navadipa in West Bengal.

The traditions were carried by his descendants as well as the rich feudal lords known as Zamindars, which spread across the eastern states. As this puja was mainly celebrated by the rich and influential people, the celebrations were in a grand scale and today, it has become 2nd important celebration after Durga Puja in Assam.
Kali Puja is celebrated at midnight on amavasya or new moon day of the Kartik month of Hindu calendar. Goddess Kali is worshiped following the Tankrik rites and rituals and animal sacrifices are a common thing during this puja. In Kamakhya Temple of Guwahati, on this day she is worshiped as Lakshmi and several devotees visit the temple to seek her blessings. On the occasion of Kali Puja is organized in every nook and corner of the state and people visit the pandals throughout the night and a number of cultural programs are organized at different places. The entire state brightens up with flickering of lights and oil lamps, which are lit in every household. People decorate their gates and doorways with flowers and rangoli. Puja is also organized in every household to seek the blessings of mother goddess Kali, who is an incarnation of Goddess Durga for the prosperity and well being. She is also worshiped in cremation grounds, where she is believed to reside. This festival is very auspicious for every Assamese and is celebrated with great zest and fervor.
