Assam Demands Bharat Ratna for Bhupen Hazarika

The king of Assam's cultural world, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika has contributed remarkably towards  promoting the rich cultural heritage of the state across the World. Conferred with the title of “The Golden Voice of Assam”, hee was a renowned music director, singer and a film maker. He was the person behind the establishment of first state owned film studio in Guwahati. His contribution towards promoting his motherland and its people is commendable. From the time when, the Bharat Ratna was founded by the 1st President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the year 1954, it has always been a topic of debate and criticism. This is the highest civilian award of India for excellence or exceptional performance in the field of science, art, sports, literature and public service.

There is no prescribed nomination procedure as such but based on the recommendations of the Prime Minister to a maximum of three awards every year is awarded by the President. Under the provisos of Article 18 (1) of the Indian Constitution, the recipients cannot apply the award before or after their name, however, they can use either of the expressions "Recipient of Bharat Ratna Award" or "Awarded Bharat Ratna by the President" to indicate that they have been honored with the award. However, today, it has been seen that Bharat Ratna is demanded for both deserving as well as undeserving people.

Assam’s Chief Minister has again demanded Bharat Ratna for Late Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 3rd death anniversary. He is definitely, a deserving person, who has contributed remarkably toward promoting the rich culture of Assam across the globe. Dr. Bhupen Hazariaka was the founder of Assam film industry in the Northeast and worked towards Tribal Welfare and Upliftment of Tribal Culture through cinema and music. He is a much deserving recipient many, as he was the one who took a small state situated in the North-eastern corner of the country to a global platform. In my opinion, he is a well-deserving person of this award. He is an icon who has left a mark in the country's cultural history. He was gem not only of North-East India but of the entire country as he had remarkably contributed toward Indian film industry.

PM Narendra Modi when visited Assam during his election campaign in the month of February early this year, he chanted the words “Joi Aai Axom” and asked “Gopinath Bordoloi along with Sardar Patel saved Assam from going into East Pakistan. But the Congress serves only one family. When they don't remember Sardar Patel, how can they remember Bordoloi?" He said that "Gopinath Bordoloiji deserved a Bharat Ratna much earlier but it was the Vajpayee government that corrected the injustice." He also said that Lakshminath Bezbaruah, Bhupen Hazarika and many such icons of Assam deserves Bharat Ratna.

We all Assamese believe that Bhupen Hazarika deserved the highest civilian award, “The Bharat Ratna” but the Centre had been ignoring it. Now that Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India and has the authority to recommend the name, he should live by his words and confer Bhupen Hazarika with Bharat Ratna.
