Newspaper has played an important role in the life of human beings since its birth. It has always been a major source of remaining informed about the happenings around the world. It is mainly a publication, issued on a regular basis, either once a week or daily. It provides information about the surroundings as well as opinions about any event and news.

History of newspaper in the state of Assam dates back to some 160 years, which started with "Arunodoi", which was first published in the year 1846 from Sibsagar. After this, many newspapers have been published, some still survive and some disappeared in due course of time. However, these periodicals and publications contributed remarkably to both Assamese language and society. Later, in the year 1882, a weekly newspaper was published by Hemchandra baruah, named “Assam News”. It was published in both English and Assamese language; however, it lasted for just 3 years and several news papers and periodicals were published thereafter. “Dainik Batori” is the first daily newspaper, which was published on 12th August 1935 by Shivaprasad Barua, a Tea industrialist. Assam Tribune was founded by Radha Govinda Baruah in the year 1939, which was first published from Guwahati and at present, it is published from both the cities. It is one of the best newspapers of the whole North-Eastern region. With a large readership, this newspaper has gained immense popularity over the years.

With a huge readership, Asomiya Pratidin ranks no. 1 among Assamese daily newspaper. It is distributed across Assam with 4 editions, which are published from Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh and North Lakhimpur. Another popular newspaper of Assam is Amar Axom, which is edited by Homen Borgohain. It is an Assamese daily newspaper, published by G.L Publication and is quite popular among the people of Assam. This newspaper is published from Guwahati and Jorhat and is circulated all over the state.

One of the oldest newspapers of Assam, Dainik Agradoot is still popular among the readers. It is a daily newspaper which has 3 editions, published from Guwahati, Tezpur and Jorhat. With headquarters at Dispur, this newspaper has a huge readership and Kanak Sen Deka is the Editor-in-chief, who has contributed remarkably in building a strong readership base.
