Unlike newspapers, magazines are publications which are mainly a collection of articles written to discuss different issues and events happening in the society. These are primarily periodical publications and cover a wide variety of topics. Magazines were first publications introduced in Assam even before the publication of newspapers. Many handwritten as well as printed magazines have been published over time, contributing towards development of Assamese literature. “Arunodoi” is the first ever Assamese magazine, which was published in the year 1846 and Asam Bandhu, published in 1885, lasted for a very short time but gave a new kind of publication to the people of Assam. Even today, a number of magazines are published in Assamese language, periodically, fortnightly and bi-weekly. Top 5 magazines of Assam are listed below:

Prantik

Ranks first among Assamese magazines, Prantik is a multi-topic magazine, which is published fortnightly from Guwahati. Since 1981, it has been playing a significant role in the life of Assam’s people both socially as well as politically. Prantik has been a favorite magazine among the people of the state. Dr. Bhabendranath Saikia, one of the foremost filmmakers as well as noted author of the state, has served as the founder editor for this magazine and Pradip Barua, who was the publisher served as an editor. This magazine has a huge readership and is even today quite popular among the Assamese people.

Bismoi
Bismoi is a big hit among the Assamese people. It is an Assamese monthly magazine, which is being published since past 4 decades. It is an entertainment magazine, which covers a diverse topic that interests the crowd and since its publication, it has managed to gather a huge crowd of readers. Short stories, Science Fictions, romantic stories, etc. are published in Bismoi and have contributed remarkably towards the development of Assamese language.

Gariyoshi
Contributing remarkably towards Assamese literature, Gariyoshi is a literary magazine founded by Chandra Prasad Saikia in the year 1994. He also served as the first editor of this popular magazine. This magazine is published by the publisher of the most popular English newspaper of North-East, Assam Tribune. It has articles written by the famous Assamese authors, which has made it popular among the literary society of Assam

Trishul

A popular entertainment magazine of Assam, Trishul was first published in the year 1978. This magazine has gained immense popularity among the readers over the years. It was the first ever Assamese entertainment magazine, which also publishes short stories, fiction, thriller and horror stories. Shantanu Tamuly and Ranju Hazarika are some of the popular Assamese authors, who write for this magazine and helped in gaining popularity. Sadly, the magazine has been discontinued recently.

Maya
A new entertainment magazine, which was started some few years back, Maya, has been successful in grabbing the attention of the people. Like other magazines, this magazine has also gained noteworthy popularity as it publishes both national and international news apart from its contribution towards Assamese literature.
