Places to visit in Sivsagar, Assam

Sivsagar, the erstwhile capital of Ahom Kingdom is one of the historical places of Assam that is worth visiting. Situated at a distance of 365 km from Guwahati, this place houses several historical monuments, which were built by the Ahom rulers during their reign. The most significant backdrop of the town is the 200 year old tank named Sibsagar tank. It has developed into a major hub for oil and tea trading in the recent years. Previously known as Rangpur, Sivsagar occupies an important place in the history of Assam. Joysagar Tank


An artificial tank that sprawls over an area of 318 acre, Joysagar tank is the largest tank within the Indian sub-continent. It is a 200 years old tank built by King Rudra Singha, a famous Ahom ruler of the 17th century. Named after his mother Joymoti, this tank was built in the site where Siulikpha condemned Joymati and tortured her till death in order to extract information about her exiled husband Gadapani.


Sivsagar Tank


Covering an area of 130 acres, Sivsagar tank was built by Queen Ambika, wife of King Shiva Singha in the year 1734. Also known as Borphukhuri, this huge tank offers a captivating view with greenery all around and three temples namely, Shiva Dol, Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol on its embankment. This tank is connected to a natural spring and hence remains filled with water throughout the year. It is one of the prime attractions of the town.


Rang Ghar


Rang Ghar is one of the most important attractions of Sivsagar that stands as an evidence to the glorious past of the state during the Ahom rule. It is two-storied structure that was earlier used as the royal abode of the Ahom rulers where they assembled to witness sports and cultural activities. It is in this very place, where “Bihu” dance was first performed as and gained popularity as the state dance of Assam. This is an architectural splendor, which is worth seeing while on a visit to the historic town of Sivsagar.


Kareng Ghar


Another important sightseeing while on a trip to Sivsagar is Kareng Ghar. Kareng Ghar was built during the 17th century by King Rudra Singha. Kareng Gahar served as the palace for the Ahom rulers, which was later reconstructed into a 7 storied building by Rajeswara Singha.


Talatal Ghar


A popular attraction of Sivsagar is the Talatal Ghar, which is situated at a distance of about 6 km from the main town. In the year 1699, it an underground fort was built by King Rudra Singha, which was named as Talatal Ghar. A 3 storied building of which the lowest storey is connected to the River Dikhow by tunnel. As it was later used by the ULFA militants as their den to carry out terrorist activities in Assam, the visit of tourist was restricted. However, off late the entry to Talatal Ghar has been opened for tourists and it is one of the must-visit places in the town.



Apart from these, there are several other places that are worth visiting in the historic town of Sivsagar. These include Gargaon Palace, Charaideo, Ahom Museum, Namdang Stone Bridge, Devi Dol, Shiva Dol, etc.
