Revolution is what Assam needs in order to put an end to the gloomy and dark days, which the state has always lived with and people of the state have been seeing since a long time. Although, there was a revolution “the Assam Andolan”, during 1980’s, nothing fruitful happened. The formation of ULFA, a terrorist group that seeks to establish a sovereign Assam via an armed struggle in the Assam conflict in the year 1979 has also created a lot of disturbance in the state and has created hindrance in the development and progress of the state. Even after so many years of India’s Independence, Assam is still not as developed as other states of India and certain things about the state needs to be changed in order to let the sun shine and put an end to the sinister days. Here are some of the things about the state that needs to be changed.
The Bandh Culture
The state of Assam has become synonymous to the word Bandh as one group or the other calls for a bandh every day in some part of the state. This is one of the most commonly used words by the common man of the state and these bandhs are followed religiously not because they support any group or their ideologies but out of fear of riots and bomb blasts. However, this bandh culture should be stopped as it is hampering not only the day to day life of people but also has a negative impact on the economy of the state. Owing to the constant bandhs that takes place in the state, everyone is affected, especially the daily wage workers, businessmen, students, etc. It is important to put an end to this bandh culture if one intends to bring about change in the state.
Put an end to the Chanda culture
Collecting of Chanda or donation has become a culture of the state. Like the bandhs that are extraneous and irritant, collecting of chanda adds to it. There is no festival or function that is celebrated collectively by a community or a group of people is carried out without collecting donation from people. This is mostly seen during the celebration of Durga Puja, Bihu, Jhulan Yatra, Ras festival, etc. The organizers of these festivals go home to home in order to take donation for celebrating it. Today, this culture has increased so much so that if people refuse to give donation, the organizers send attackers to collect. This is as well creating a lot of problem to the common man and it needs to be completely eradicated to make the state a better place to live.
Improvement in the quality of Regional Media
News channels are mushrooming in the state of Assam; however, the quality of news is degrading day by day. The news that is broadcasted in regional media is mostly irrelevant and is basically running business and targeting sales. Moreover, regional media of Assam does not even know the meaning of “Breaking News” and the news that flashes in the TV under this heading is just outlandish. Journalism in the true sense of the word has been put aside by these regional new channels of the state. It needs to understand the meaning of Journalism and provide substantial and relevant news that will enhance the knowledge of people about the World.
Corruption
Like all other states of India, Assam is also a victim of corruption, where rich people are becoming richer and poor are becoming poorer. The increasing corruption in every sector is creating a huge problem in the development and progress of the state. The mentality of the people needs to be changed in order to eradicate the deep rooted problem of the state.
Stop creating uproar for every small thing
Be it 10th or 12th board results or any small event, the uproar among the public is excess. The state toppers of 10th and 12th are treated like some big personalities who have come back after their victory in the battle field. They are interviewed as if they have achieved noble prize; however, it is important that they should be encouraged and motivated to do well in the future but should not be hyped so much. People should understand that there are much bigger things in life and uproar that is created for every trivial issue should be ended.
These are just a few things that have been mentioned here that needs to be changed about Assam. However, the most important thing is that before changing the things about the state, bringing about change within ourselves is more important. It is the new generation who wants to see the changes and these changes can be brought about only the young generation and it is also important to remember and understand that no one else except us will be able to bring about changes to make our beloved state of Assam a better place to live.
