Da Parbatia Temple of Tezpur, Assam

Tezpur, fondly called "the city of ramance" and a town that is endowed with tradition, folklore, and mythology, is situated in the Sonitpur district of Assam. Positioned amidst the  snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas and verdant hills, the city is the an ideal travel destination in the state of Assam, which dates back to 6th century A.D. It was built by the Ahoms who ruled over the state for over 600 years, which was destroyed by the earthquake that took place in the year 1897 and today only the remnants of it which is about 1500 years old remains.

Da Parbatia temple has developed into a major tourist spots of Tezpur and is famous for its architectural splendor. One of the oldest surviving temples of Assam, this temple is well-known for sculptural or iconoclastic art in the form of the ruins of the door-frame that still stands withstanding all the natural calamities that took place during the past centuries. This temple represents the early Gupta School of sculpture, which is revealed by the intricate carvings and imprints found on the door-frame of the temple. The doorframe of this temple is festooned with the images of Goddess Ganga and Yamuna that stands with grace and poise, with garlands in their hands. Apart from the complete doorframe is also decorated with beautiful and delicate shrubbery. Owing to the wonderful architecture of the temple and its neat carvings belonging to the 5th and 6th centuries AD, this place is a protected site under the support of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Exclusivity of this temple, specially the Da Parbatia Gate is afar description and to get a glance of this exquisite gate, people from different parts of the country and abroad come to witness this architectural wonder. It can be easily reach and is located on the PWD road side and today, it has become a place of worship and tourist attraction. Tezpur is situated at a distance of about 180 km from Guwahati and can be reached by air, bus as well railways. The nearest airport to reach the temple is Salonibari in Tezpur which flies from Guwahati and Kolkata on particular days of the week from where one can hire a taxi. The railway station is also located in Dekargaon, which is at a distance of approximately 15km from the temple.
