Historical Monuments of Assam

Assam situated on the North-Eastern part of India and is well-known for its rich biodiversity. It is one of the ancient states of the country that finds its mention in the mythological scriptures. Assam has been a seat of several dynasties and this is evident from the existence of several monuments belonging to the medieval period (5th-6th century A.D. to 19th century A.D.). It maintained cultural relation with the main land. The architectural style of the monuments reflects the existence of different dynasties that ruled over the state for several years. Some of the prominent and important historical monuments of Assam that are worth visiting are listed below.
 

Agnigarh, Tezpur


Agnigarh is a historical site, well-known romance of princess Usha, who was the only daughter of king Bana and Aniruddha, grandson of Lord Krishna. It is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Tezpur, an important town of Sonitpur district. Agnigarh is a fortress, which stands as an eyewitness to the classic love story of Usha and Anirudha. According to the tales, the fortress of Agnigarh was constructed by KingBanasura, the Asura king of ancient Tezpur to keep his daughter Usha sheltered from the eyes of others. This is a must-visit historical monument that has been well-preserved and conserved even today and the immortal love of Aniruddha and Usha is still narrated by the bricks present in the fortress.
 

Joysagar, Sivsagar
 

The largest man-made tank within the Indian sub-continent, Joysagar is located in Sivsagar town, the erstwhile capital of Ahom Kingdom. This tank was built by King Rudra Singha, a famous Ahom ruler of the 17th century. Straddling over an area of 318 acre, this tank was named after his mother Joymoti, who was tortured to death in the nearby region of Jerenga Pothar. The site of this water-tank was chosen where Siulikpha condemned Joymati in order to gather information about her husband Gadapani, who was in exile and was later crowned as the king.

Cachari Ruins
 

Another historical place that is worth a visit is the Cachari Ruins of Assam. These ruins comprise historical miscellany of unfinished residential house, Baradwari, Ranahandi Temple, Shan Mandir, along with almost seven to eight small temples, Singh Darwazam and East Wall.
 

Rang Ghar, Sivsagar


Rang ghar is another important historical monument situated in the Sivsagar district that stands as an evidence to the glorious past of the state during the Ahom rule. A two-storied structure, which was used as the place where Ahom Kings, queens and nobles, assembled to witness sports as well as other activities. During the festival of `Rongali Bihu’, the Kings, Queens and the nobles of the Ahom kingdom used to enjoy the festival and witness the Bihu dance from this building, which was held in the compound of Rang Ghar. This place is a must-visit while on a trip to Assam.
 
Besides these, there are several other historical monuments spread over the land of Assam that reveals the glorious historical past of the state. Some of these are Kareng Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Lt. Creswell`s tomb, tombs at Jogighopa region, pillars and inscriptions on the Island of Urvasi, etc.
