Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya

A noted Assamese author, who penned a number of novels and short stories, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya is one of the pioneers of the modern Assamese literature. The first Assamese writer to receive Jnanpith Award, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya was among a few writers who continued to write and rightly flourished a genuine litterateur in the course of time.

Born on 14th October 1924 in Safrai, Assam, Birendra Kr. Bhattacharya was one of the foremost writers of Assam, who took Assamese literature to a completely different level. In the year 1957, he wrote his “Rajpahte Ringiai” which was based on social and political analysis. He was one of the most accomplished socially realistic writers and was one of the most successful among the Second World War writers. s. His novel “Mritunjay” was the most influential novel of his life which is based on the struggle of the people of Assam during the pre-independence period. His novel “Iyaruingom” is considered a masterpiece of Indian literature, which is based on the story of the Tankhrool Naga tribes residing in Manipur and their sufferings during separatist movement of Fizo. It was published in the year 1960 and this very book fetched him Sahitya Akademi Award.

“Aai” is another famous novel written by the Jnanpith award winner, which was published in the year 1958. In the year 1964 the novel “Shataghni” based on China’s attack on India was published. “Pratipad”, “Ranga Megh”, “Daaini”, “Ballari”, just to name a few are some of his famous novels. He was also a connoisseur in writing short stories, namely “Kolong Aajiu Boi” and “Satsori”. A majority of his poems were published in the magazine named “Jayanti". In the year 2005 a translation published by Katha books “Love in the time of Insurgency” was released. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya was the first ever recipient of the Jnanpith Award given to an Assamese writer in the year 1979 for his novel “Mritunjay”. In 1961 he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel “Iyaruingom”. During 1983-85 he took over Assam Sahitya Sabha as the president.

Raajpothae Ringiyai, Aai, Yaruinggom, Sataghni, Nostochandra, Bharati, Pratipod, Mrityunjoy, Sinaki Suti, Ognigarh, Kobor aru Phul, Poribrajak Bollori, Aeti Nisha, Lobo aru Ebha, Daaini, Ronga Megh, Sorot Kowar, Muni Sunir Pohar, Kaalor Humuniah, Phul Kowarar Pokhi Ghora, Prem aru Mrityu and Juddha aru Shanti are some of the novels written by the great author. Akuri aetaa Suti Golpo, Saatsori aru Khiriki Kaasar Aason and Kolong Aajio Boi are the short stories written by the author. He also wrote a number of poems and prose. On 6th August 1997, the great author and Jnapith Award winner Birendra Kr. Bhattacharya left for his heavenly abode.
