One of the most beautiful and
diverse states of India is Assam, which is situated in the North-Eastern part of
the country. Situated on the south of the eastern Himalayas, it is considered
as the “Gateway to North-East India”. It is one of the largest states among all
the eight north-eastern states and shares its international borders with Bhutan
and Bangladesh. It is a state that is well-known for its rich biodiversity and
houses a number of wildlife sanctuaries. Assam was also known for its Sal tree
forests and forest products along with having the highest population of one-horned
Indian rhinoceros. Assam is a great state for several reasons.
Assam is one of the ancient
states of India, which finds its mention even in the great Indian epic,
Mahabharata. It also finds its mention in the Kalika Purana, according to
which, the earliest ruler of Assam was Mahiranga Danav of the Danava dynasty,
which was removed by Naraka who established the Naraka dynasty. It also has
proofs of human settlements from all the periods of the Stone ages. The culture
of Assam is composite, which is formed by amalgamation of different customs,
traditions, rituals, languages and people. The culture of the state is vibrant
and unique, which distinguishes it from other parts of the country. Dance,
music, arts and crafts, cuisine, symbolism, festivals, languages, etc. together
forms the culture of the state and it is in the true sense a 'cultural system'
composed of different sub-systems.
Assam is the birthplace of great
writers, who brought glory to the state with their work. Jnapith Award winner
Mamoni Raisom Goswami and Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, Homen Borgohain,
Bhabendra Nath Saikia, etc. are some of the great writers born in the beautiful
land of Assam. These writers have contributed immensely towards the development
of Assamese literature. . It is also the birth place of several patriots, who
sacrificed their lives for the motherland and has contributed remarkably
towards the freedom movement of Assam. Martyrs like Kanaklata Barua, Piyoli
Phukan, Maniram Dewan, Kushal Konwar, etc. to name a few has contributed
immensely towards the freedom struggle of the nation against the British
Colonial rule.
Another reason that makes Assam a
great state is that it has been invaded by the rulers of Delhi Sultanate and
Mughals 17 times but could not succeed in establishing their rule over the
state owing to the presence of some great leaders like Lachi Borphukan, who
held his motherland high over everything.
Besides these, Assam houses the oldest oil well in operation of the
World as well as the first oil refinery of Asia. The state manufactures the
highest amount of crude oil in India along with natural gas. Furthermore, it is
the home to Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park, which have been
declared as the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Apart from these reasons, the
state of Assam is great because of its people, who are well-known for their
hospitability and broad-minded nature.
