The mystic land of Assam, which is bestowed with the bounties of nature, is often referred to as the “Gateway to the North-East”. Situated on the littoral of the mighty river Brahmaputra, Assam is a diverse state that displays a gamut of different cultures and landscape. Guwahati
One of the major cities of Assam, Guwahati is one of the must-visit places in Assam. Enfolding the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra, Guwahati is the gateway to the enthralling North East India. The city is the largest one in the whole state and is the commercial as well as educational hub of Assam. Guwahati houses one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimages, The Kamakhya Temple, which is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths of India. The city also offers numerous other places to visit, which include the Assam State Museum, Assam State Planetarium, Shrimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra, Assam State Zoo, Umananda (The Peacock Island), Balaji Temple, shopping malls, etc. just to name a few.
Sualkuchi
The state of Assam is renowned for producing silk, mainly of three varieties, namely Mug Silk, Eri Silk and White Silk. Sualkuchi, which is located about 32 km from Guwahati has world's largest weaving villages and hence gets the name as “Manchester of the East”. This place is worth visiting as one can not only get a glimpse of the variety of silk that is produces in Assam but also can buy it. One of the amazing things about this place is that almost all the inhabitants are engaged in the handloom industry that manufactures silk clothes.
Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga National Park is one of the most prominent attractions of the state, which is not just visited by the domestic tourists but is thronged by visitors from all over the globe. Declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this national park is home to a variety of wild animals and birds, which include wild elephants, wild boars, wild buffaloes, deer, tiger, leopard, langur, snakes and other reptiles. This National Park boasts of being the home to the largest number of one-horned Rhinoceros in the World and is a resort for a variety of migratory birds.
Sivasagar
The erstwhile capital of the Ahom Kingdom that ruled over Assam for over 600 years, Sivasagar is one of the must-visit places, which offers a glimpse of the historical heritage of the state. Situated at a distance of about 369 km from Guwahati, this place houses a number of historical monuments that depicts the picture of the state during the rule of Ahom Dynasty. Joysagar tank, Shiva Dol, Rang Ghar, Tolatol Ghar, Kareng Ghar and Sivasagar tank are some of the historical monuments and places, which are worth a visit.
Majuli
The World’s largest riverine island, Majuli is the cultural seat of Assam. It is one of the famous destinations of Assam, which is visited by tourists from all over the World. The first Satra was established in this island by Srimanta Shankardev, the father of Neo Vaishnavate religion. This island has preserved and conserved the rich Assamese cultural heritage in form of dance, music, drama, etc. This island is a must-visit destination, while on a trip to the mystic land of Assam.
