Sonitpur District, Assam

An administrative district of the North-Eastern state of Assam, Sonitpur is one of the most important as well as most populous districts of the state and its district headquarter is at Tezpur. Popular for its historical monuments, rich cultural heritage and enchanting beauty of the nature, this district covers a total area of 5,324 sq km. With a population of 19,25,975 as per the 2011 census, it the 2nd largest districts of the state, which is bounded by Lakhimpur district towards its east, Darrang district towards its west, Arunachal Pradesh towards its North and to its south is the Brahmaputra river. 
 Nestled by the foothills of Himalayan Mountain range that lies in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and the massive Brahmaputra River, Sonitpur district is primarily a plain area with few lush green hills.
 
The name Sonitpur means “the city of blood” and has sub-tropical climate that features Monsoon climate where summers are generally hot and the air is filled with humidity that measures an average temperature of 290 C. The maximum temperature that reaches the peak is during the month of May and early June before the advent of the rain. The region experiences monsoon from the later part of June to beginning of September, which is caused by the South-West monsoon wind. Although the monsoon season is most awaited season, especially by the farmers, it comes with several destructive effects like flood. During the Autmn season, the weather is generally dry and the average temperature recorded is about 16 0C. The winter season begins from October, when the climate is pleasant; however, it becomes chilling during the last part of December or the beginning of January.
 
Sonitpur district features agrarian economy and still follows the traditional processes, hence the development is stagnant or rather there is no such major and notable development. Over 80% of the total population of the district is dependent of agriculture industry and in many parts of the district; people follow the tradition of rain fed single crop cultivation. Besides the traditional agricultural industry, the district also houses a number of Tea Gardens and boast of housing the largest Tea Garden of Asia, the Monabari Tea Estate located close to Bishwanath Chariali.
 
Tezpur is the major city of the district and fondly called the “City of Romance”. Formerly known as Sonitpur, Tezpur offers a number of places that are worth visiting. A tranquil town situated on the embankment of the mighty Brahmaputra, is well-known for its archeological ruins infused in folklore and mythology; ancient temples and splendid parks. The district is worth a visit owing to its natural beauty and ancient history.
