Kaziranga National Park, Assam

At the nucleus of the amazing biodiveristy is the rich landscape of Assam with thriving hills and mystic valleys dismembered by the magnificent River Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Assam is an abode of more than 180 species of mammals, which include species that are rare and in danger of extinction such as the one-horned rhinos, the golden langur, the royal Bengal tiger hoolock gibbon, and an extravagant variety of avifauna. The state being bestowed with natural bounties and beauty, it is a place for nature lovers as it houses five national parks, of which two of these, namely Kaziranga National Park and Manas are declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Straddling over an area of 858 sq km, Kaziranga National Park lies in the floodplains of Assam on the banks of the River Brahmaputra. Scraps of mixed deciduous forests are sprinkled with vast expanse of scorches of river islands formed by the changing course of the Brahmaputra, savannah grasslands and wetlands. The park is divided into five points, namely the Northern point,  Western which has its entry point at Bagori, Western-most Burha Pahar, Eastern point is at Agratoli, is another point situated at Ghorakati, Western which has its entry point at Bagori and lastly and lastly,  The first four lie on the southern side of the river while the last is on the northern bank. The national park is the home to 2/3rd of the population of the greater One-horned rhinoceros. Besides this, it also swanks of having the highest number of tigers amongst the protected areas in the world declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large mammal populations of elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer.

Kaziranga National Park lies partly in the Nogaon District and in Golaghat District and it is the oldest national park in the state. Hemmed by table-top tea bushes, Kaziranga National Park is a major tourist attraction of the state and contributes a major part in developing the , Kaziranga National Park is a major tourist attraction of the state and contributes a major part in the revenue of the state. The landscape of Kaziranga is of complete forest, tall elephant grass, rocky reeds, swampy and shallow pools, have made this place popular among the wildlife enthusiast, which has been declared as National Park in 1974. The best time to visit this National Park is November to April.

A good way to discover the beauty of nature is on elephant-back as these gentle creatures stride through the tall grass. Kaziranga houses the rhinos, which are usually found in good grazing with deer and buffaloes. It is a natural habitat of the wildlife of Assam is a must-visit places of the state, which is something that is not to be missed.
