After the Lok Sabha Polls in 2014, lotus bloomed on the banks of the mighty River Brahmaputra. There had been a lot of hue and cry, and numerous stories of the polls about who will win and form government in the centre. After the results BJP won with absolute majority and formed the Government at the center. However, the interesting story is the onset of BJP in the eastern part of the country, especially in Assam. The political scenario of Assam had completely changed during the 14th Lok Sabha elections. Although, BJP was a strong contender for Congress even in the state of Assam, this time the party had come out really strong and won over 7 seats in the entire state. Sarbananda Sonwal, the Assam President of BJP expected 5 to 6 seats in 14 constituencies of the state, but was overwhelmed, when they won 7 seats out of 14. This was a big win for Bharatiya Janata Party, marking the rise of the orange party in Assam, which is a major state of North-East India and the commercial hub of the region.
critics and theorists have long given their intellectual support to the
practice of realist film making. In a nutshell, the realist film offers the
possibility of "the mechanical imitation of nature" in which original
and copy become indistinguishable in the eyes of the common man whom we refer
as the viewer. The great directors like Bazin, Bresson, De Sica, Renoir,
Rossellini, and Orson Welleshad a common desire to put cinema in a very simple fundamental
faith called “reality” where cinema will be identified as the fulfillment of
the human craving for realistic representation and feeling. And vision and
mission of modern cinema lies exactly there with its goal - simplicity, purity,
and transparency.

Leafing through one of the old editions of Frontline, I was intrigued by the opening lines of the obituary for Surendra Mohan, a renowned socialist leader of his time- “To remember him is to recall the finest human virtues and political values that the socialist movement in India contributed to the country’s public life.He will be remembered across the political spectrum for upholding the tradition of personal and political integrity established by the first generation of leaders of the socialist movement.”

Belonging to a generation born in the post liberalization era years after the socialist movement lost its vitality in the political spectrum, my understanding of the different facets of the movement remains partially obscure. However, I have grown up hearing about the charismatic socialist leaders and their contributions in the socio-cultural realm, especially in Assam. Socialists like Hem Baruah and Dr.Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya require no introduction as their contribution- educational, political, social and literary, hold a deep impact over the Assamese legacy. However,a name which we often forget to recall and whose contributions we fail to recognize while remembering the makers of modern Assam is that of another notable socialist leader, late Ajit Kumar Sharma.A prolific speaker,a prominent educationist, a gifted writer,a revered guru to generations of students and one of the most influential public intellectuals of his time,Sharma was a committed socialist.
Assam celebrates the festival of Kali Puja in a grand way and it is celebrated to seek blessings from the Goddess for protecting the people against drought and war, for
general happiness, health, wealth, and peace. This festival coincides with Diwali and n this occasion, when the entire nation worships Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha; Assam, Bengal and Orissa worships mother Goddess Kali. This diversity in Indian culture is completely incredible. If we turn around the pages of Indian history, the celebration of this
puja started only in the 18th century by Raja Krishnachandra, the King
of Navadipa in West Bengal.
About 50,000 hectares of agricultural land is still submerged under water with more than 37,000 hectares of land are affected alone in Goalpara, thumping almost 83,000 families, who are dependent on farming.

Dowry system that prevails in Indian society is not just an evil but the mother of all social evils. It is a very old practice that has been going on in the country, giving birth to several other social evils such as female feticide, girl child homicide, domestic violence, dowry deaths and the list goes on. Every year, a huge number of death and violence against women are recorded, which is caused due to dowry. This social evil is mostly prevalent in North, South, West and some parts of eastern India. Dowry system in the entire nation has become a part of the rituals, customs and traditions that have been deep rooted in the society. Moreover, even though people talk about modernization, women empowerment, etc., women are still considered as a mere commodity. In India, having a girl child is like a curse for them owing to the prevalence of dowry system.

Even though, female literacy rate has increased, the condition of women in Indian society is still the same. They are still victims of several social injustice, discrimination, social evils, etc. and very less has been done to improve the condition of women in the society. It seems that everything is just in talks. Recently, it has been reported that a village in the state of Kerala named Nilambur is the first dowry-free village in India. It has also been reported that the word “dowry” is the most hated word in this village. This is indeed an encouraging and motivating thing for the entire nation, however; most people are still ignorant of the fact that the entire North-East India has been a dowry-free region since the beginning.

Dowry system has never been a part of culture of North-East India, be it Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura or Arunachal Pradesh. The whole region has always been glorified for its egalitarian status and has remained free from this social evil as well as other social evils that are born out of it, for centuries. In this part of India, women are considered equivalent to their male counterparts and are conferred with equal status and respect. Women of this region are independent as well as have a say of their own as men have never considered women as a weaker gender or as a commodity. In one the previous seasons of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, Amir Khan had highlighted the fact that “no dowry system exist in North-East”. Instead, the bride is showered with gifts by the groom’s family and in the marriage system of North-East, the groom’s family gives respect and honor to both the bride and her family, which might be a bizarre for most Indians; however, this is completely true. It is a part of the culture of this region.

In North-East India, girls are not considered as a burden where cases of infant homicide, female feticide, dowry death or gender violence are very rare among the indigenous groups. North-Eastern women relatively enjoy more equality and respect as compared to other parts of the nation. In many provinces of North-East, the parents of the bride give her all the necessary things that are required to start her new home as per their capability. This should not be mistaken with dowry. This is rather stridhan, which is given to the girl and not to the groom or his family. However, North-Eastern people should remain alert about the fact that the custom of stridhan may at some point of time get converted into a social evil, like dowry.

With the influx of people from other parts of the country for various purposes, it cannot be said that dowry is completely absent in North-East, especially in Assam and ignoring this fact would mean overlooking the cultural diversity that is prevalent here. Although, it is not a part of the Assamese culture or any of the cultures of North Eastern states, with the coming of the non-indigenous communities, today, many cases such as “joutuk dabi” and “buwari hotya” have been reported. As exceptions are always there and idiots can be found everywhere, it is the duty of people of this region to prevent the non-indigenous communities as well as the locals, who practice this social evil, as the whole region have been resistant to this practice since centuries. In fact, the non-indigenous communities should learn from culture of North-East region and put an end to the long prevailing dowry system, completely.

Digboi, a small town situated in Tinsukia District of Assam, boasts of having the World’s oldest oil refinery in operation. It is the birthplace of India’s Oil Industry and is famous for housing Asia’s first Oil Refinery. It offers a glimpse of the bygone era. Digboi is the oldest oil city of India, scattered with massive bungalows that represents Victorian architecture, large golf course, church and verdant greenery.

Situated amid dense and malaria infested jungles, Digboi is a jewel in the crown of Assam. The history of oil Industry of India traces back to the era of British rule, when first oil deposits were discovered near Digboi, in the year 1889. This discovery was followed by industrial development in the state of Assam as well as in India. This small township, situated in the extreme North-east corner of the state, engraved a place in the industrial history of the country over more than 100 years ago. The history of this oil town dates back to 1867, when some employees of Assam Railway and Trading Company (ARTC) ventured into the hostile area in search of black gold. On their way, they discovered the legs of their elephant soaked in black mud, which smelt somewhat like oil. When they retracked the trails, following the footprints, they found oil sipping out if the land and that’s how, crude oil in Assam was discovered.

The town got its name from the phrase “dig-boy-dig”, which the Englishmen used for their laborers while digging crude oil in the region. Following the discovery, in the year 1889, small oil installations were started by the English and in the year 1901, Asia’s first oil refinery was constructed in the small, secluded town Digboi. This marks the birth of oil industry in India, making this town its birthplace. During the 2nd World War, the oil fields in the town produced nearly 7,000 barrels of oil per day. The World’s oldest oil refinery in operation, The Digboi Oil Refinery, now belongs to the Assam division of Indian Oil Corporation and even today, it produces 3 lakh tones of crude oil along with other petroleum products like kerosene, diesel and petrol.

Situated in the north-eastern corner of India, Assam is a state endowed with natural resources, minerals and biodiversity. It has its own distinct culture, which is formed by assimilation of different cultures followed by the natives of the state. Being the “Gateway of North-East”, Assam is also considered as the educational and commercial hub of the entire region. Although it is considered as the educational hub and many students from various parts of the region visits the state, the education system here, is still not up to the mark. It needs a lot of reformation in various stages, starting from primary education system.

The importance of education in the lives of people cannot be ignored as it plays a crucial role in shaping ones personality, intellect, etc. With the beginning of modernization, education has played vital role in modernizing Assamese people and enriching the culture. The development of modern education in Assam started when the British came into power in the year 1826. In the year 1835, secondary education started in Assam, when Captain Jenkins, the then Commissioner of Assam started an English medium school in the city of Guwahati named “Guwahati Seminari” which is the present Cotton Collegiate School located in Panbazar. In the year 1841 another school was opened in Sivsagar, which is the present day “Sibsagar Govt. Higher Secondary school”. Since then, the state had made a noteworthy development in the field of education. As per the 2011 census, the literacy rate of the state was 73.18% with the urban areas showing a higher percentage of 88.88%, and the rural areas showed 70.44%. Statistically, males and females had a discrepancy in their literacy rates; however, the urban females at 67.27% are much higher than the all India female literacy rate i.e. 65.46%.

Although, there have been several remarkable developments in the education system of Assam since pre-independence era, some reforms are still needed as it is still not upto-date. Most importantly, the education system of the state is not systematic and lacks in many aspect. There are very few qualified teachers in the primary level and since this level forms the basis of strong education, Government should appoint qualified teachers, who are properly trained. Another significant thing that needs reformation is the infrastructure of schools and colleges. The major fault lies in the infrastructure, which is not strong enough for implication of the necessary reforms. Next important reform that needs to be made is that job-oriented courses should be introduced to put an end to the long persisting unemployment problem in the state. In addition to these, modern-day techniques should be employed to impart education to students in schools and colleges.

Situated on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra, Assam is one of the most important states of North-East India. However, the recurring floods in Barak Valley and Brahmaputra Valley of Assam reflect the poor infrastructure of the state. The Brahmaputra valley characterizes an extremely flood-prone region typified by hazards of flood and erosion that create an annual turmoil of devastations bringing innumerable miseries to the people, causing huge loss as well as damage to public property and infrastructure. The recurring flood in the state every year has been causing a major economic hazard to the state. The extent of damage caused by it has increased considerably in recent years, mainly after the great earthquake that took place in the year 1950, which recorded 8.7 on the Richter scale. Later, the tributaries of the Bramaputra River, like the Dihang, Dihing and Subansiri, which were dammed, broke a few days after the earthquake that resulted in serious flooding. In this flood, many people lost their lives, property and lots more.

Flood in the state is nothing new and since 1954, every year the state, especially the Brahmaputra Valley has suffered major floods. Approximately 40% of its land surface is vulnerable to flood damage. The floods in Assam are caused by several anthropogenic and natural factors. The changing monsoon rainfall, topography of the state, outpouring of riverine areas, erosion of river banks, poor infrastructure are some of the major reasons of flood in the state. Every year, the people of the state have to combat a lost battle against flood. The statistics of reveals that the Brahmaputra basin contributes to a major portion of India’s flood statistics. Another major cause of the recurring and devastating flood in Assam is also due to lack of proper drainage system in the major cities of the state. Moreover, the continuous erosion of the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra and its tributaries is also a prime reason of the flood that has been affecting the lives of people of Assam.

Even in 2014, many people have lost their lives, their property, near and dear ones in flood. Last year as well, 12 districts of the state were affected by flood, in which 396 villages were affected and around 7000 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed. This is really a huge hazard not just for the people, who are affected by it but to the whole state and its economy. Government should now become serious about this issue and take some important measure to combat it. This constant flood in the state is a reflection of the poor infrastructure and by improving it can be a long-lasting solution to put an end to the persistent flood in Assam. It is true that nothing can be done to the changing climatic conditions or earthquake or any other natural calamity but by improving the infrastructure, this issue can be resolved to a great extent and save the life and property of many people.

Situated atop the Nilachal Hills, Kamakhya Temple is one of the most revered Shakti Peeths in India. It is associated with the tale of Daksha Yagna and Lord Shiva. The temple is located on the western part of the city of Guwahati. Residing on the Kamagiri hills, this Shakti Shrine finds its mention in Kalika Purana, which describes Kamakhya as the giver of deliverance, fulfiller of wishes and desires, and the young wife of lord Shiva, the destroyer. It is one of the most important Hindu Pilgrimages of India and is thronged by devotees from all across the globe, especially by tantric worshipers. The temple was earlier destroyed and in the 17th century, it was rebuilt by King Nara Narayana of Koch Dynasty. It is counted among the most revered and important Aadi Shakti Peeths of India and is mainly associated with tantric form of worship.

According to Hindu Mythology, the temple is associated with the story of Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva. She was the daughter of the mythological King, Daksha and fell in love of Shiva. She wanted to marry him but was opposed by her father, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, who is known as the preserver of the universe. However, she defied her father and tied the nuptial knot with Shiva and lived with him. Once, King Daksha organized a huge yagna and invited all the Gods and Goddesses to attend it, except for his daughter Sati and her husband. When she heard about the yagna, she wanted to attend it but her husband Shiva was not in favor of it. Nevertheless, inspite of her husband’s disagreement, she went to the yagna, where she and her husband were insulted by her father. She could not take the insult of her husband and threw herself into the holy fire. Doing this, the yagna stopped as the fire became impure. Hearing the incident about Sati, Shiva got infuriated and appeared in the venue. He was grief stricken and carried the body of his beloved wife on his shoulder; he began his tandava in the heave. He swore to continue his dance until the body of his wife rots. In order to stop Shiva, Lord Vishnu took his Sudarshan Chakra and cut the body of Sati into pieces. The parts of Sati’s body fell in different parts and hence, the Shakti Peeths were formed. The Yoni or the Genitals of the Goddess fell in the place where Kamakhya temple has been built.

Kamakhya temple is also known as the temple of menstruating goddess as the genitals or the yoni of Aadi Shakti fell in this place. She is also considered as the important Goddess of tantric Worship and different legends are also associated with the temple. Within the vicinity of the main temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, different temples dedicated to “Dasa Mahavidya” are situated. Kamakhya is considered to be the most important and powerful of all. The main temple houses no idol of the Goddess and in a corner of the cave, which is situated inside the temple, an idol of the yoni has been sculpted, which is the object of worship. There is a natural spring inside the cave that keeps the stone moist.

Ambuvachi Mela is the most important festival celebrated in the temple. During this festival, it is believed that the Goddess undergoes menstrual period. The temple remains closed for three days; however, during this time the temple remains crowded with devotees from all over the globe. Besides this, Durga Puja and Manasa Puja are celebrated in the temple in a grand scale. Kamakhya is an important Hindu Pilgrimage of India and is a must-visit temple while on a visit to Guwahati.
