Bandhs have become an integral part of Assam’s daily life. Many political organizations, students associations and other such organizations often call for bandhs to draw the attention of both the public and government. These bandhs are called to draw the attention toward their grievances. It has become a major device for protesting against any issue which they do not consent to.
The concept of bandhs in Assam started with the Assam Movement in the year 1979, which was a famous movement against illegal immigrants in the state. During that time, bandhs were effective to awaken the people to make the state a better and developed place. However, these bandhs are today called for every trivial issue. It is indeed very sad that a whole generation of the state have grown up under the shadow of bandhs that are called by various organizations. Besides Assam Bandhs, several local bandhs are called every now and then by small local organizations. These bandhs affect the normal life of people and, more importantly, blows up the state’s economy.
Because of these bandhs, the state has suffered a loss of crores of rupees. As per a report by Industries and Commerce of North Eastern regions (ICNER), the state faces a loss of Rs. 900 crores every year, owing to these bandhs. It has affected the economy of the state in an adverse way and has turned into a major hindrance for the economic development of the state. Only by putting an end to these bandhs, economic development in Assam is possible. Furthermore, it not just affects the economy of the state but also hampers the daily life of people. The daily wagers face a lot of problem owing to these bandhs as they cannot go for work and it brings a question mark to their sustenance. It also affects the life of students as the educational institutions remain closed because of these bandhs and also, exams are being postponed because of it, which affects the career of the students. In addition, the bandh culture that is prevalent in the state today is against the democratic framework of the nation.

However, it has now become imperative that every fellow Assamese join hands and put an end to the long prevailing “bandh culture” of Assam. Every individual of the state should pledge to put an end to it if they aspire to see Assam as a developed state. Moreover, it is not the solution for resolving issues, rather it accentuates other issues and creates hindrance in growth and development of the state.
