Syed Abdul Malik – the uncrowned emperor of Assamese Literature

The uncrowned emperor of Assamese Literature, Syed Abdul Malik was a notable writer of Assam. Influenced by the methods of Anton Chekhov and Guy de Maupassant, Syed Abdul Malik makes use of a variety of characters in his novels but ably relates them, which is a distinctive feature of his works. He was an unrivalled author in fictional work and there is there has been no writer like him who has contributed extensively towards the progress and growth of Assamese Literature.
 
Born on 15th January 1919 at Naharani Village of Golaghat District to Syed Rahmat Ali and Syeda Lutfun Nissa, Syed Abdul Malik started writing at a very early age. He deepened Assamese literature with short stories, novels, poetry and other writings spanning over five decades. Malik’s contribution to Assamese literature, particularly in the sphere of the short story and novel, is indeed noteworthy. He is considered to be the foremost among the fiction writers of the pre as well as post world war period, who was successful in describing the problems of man and the society. Malik’s advent in Assam’s literary horizon has marked a new era. His first novel named La Sa Gu was published in part in Bahini, a monthly magazine from 1945 to 46. This novel was based on The oppressed, the neglected, the downtrodden people of the world are like the lower support of the Kuber’s treasure box and according to him, they are the LCM, which means the lowest common multiple. This novel was based on social inequalities and racial discriminations that prevailed in the society. Rathar Chakari Ghure (Wheels of the Chariot Roll); Kanthahar (Necklace) and a few others have a common theme, which depicts the pain and suffering of the neglected lot in the society.
 
The stories written by Malik can be classified into two categories, namely romantic and social consciousness. He is an arch-romanticist and his socially conscious stories like Siu maril, Aghantar diary, Rangagara are tinged with a basic romantic attitude. He is a keen story-teller and an inspiring creator of character, which distinguishes his work from other writers. Surujmukhir Swapna, Swapna Bhanga, Adharxila, Doctor Arunabhor Asampurna Jivani, Kavitar Naam Labha, Pran Samudra, Trisul, Dukhan Nadi aru Ekhon Marubhumi, Rup Tirhar Yatri and Dhanya Nara Tanu Bhal are some of the novels by the author. Aghari Atmar Kahini is the most famous novel by the author, which fetched him Sahitya Akademi award. He was the member of Asom Sahitya Sabha. He was awarded Padma Shri in the year 1984, Padma Bhushan in the year 1992 and Srimanta Sankaradeva Award in the year 1999. 
 
On December 20, 2000 at the age of 81, Syed Abdul Malik left for his heavenly abode. During his lifetime, he penned sixty novels, eleven plays, five collections of poems, five books for children, three travelogues and thousand short stories. His contribution towards the upliftment and enrichment Assamese literature is noteworthy.
