Situated in the North-Eastern corner of India, Assam is one of the largest states of the region bestowed with rich biodiversity and natural resources. It is the land of unseen natural beauty situated on the littoral of the mighty Brahmaputra River. Red rivers, blue hills, spectacular landscape, hospitable people, diverse rare and endangered species of animals and birds together with one-horned rhino and herds of wild elephants best describes the state. Culture of Assam
The culture of Assam, which is formed by extensive racial amalgamation of the inhabitants of different races, namely Aryan, Mongolian, Indo-Iranian and Indo-Burmese origin, is something that makes the state stand out. The unique culture of the state is formed by a blend of beliefs, faith, religions, festivals, food, language, dance & music and art & crafts. The origin of Assamese culture traces back to thousand years when the first cultural amalgamation ensued between people of Tibeto-Burman and Austro-Asiatic. The uniqueness of the state’s culture is portrayed by celebration of different festivals by different tribes with equal fervor and enthusiasm. History of Assam
The state has an illustrious and long history which dates back to the Stone Age. The history of Assam is primarily formed by the assimilation of different races from north, east and west, namely Tibeto-Burman, Indo-Aryan and Austro-Asiatic. The state also finds its mention in the great Indian Epic “Mahabharata”. The several historical monuments present in different parts of the state narrate the saga of glorious past. It is the only state in India, where Mughals were defeated 17 times by the Ahom rulers, who ruled over the state for about 600 years. Assam indeed has a rich historical background of which one should be proud of.
Wildlife of Assam
The state of Assam is well-known for its biodiversity and houses a number of wildlife sanctuaries, forest reserves and national parks, which forms the natural habitat for the wildlife of the state. It is the home to several endangered species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. It has an affluent wildlife and is famous for the one-horned rhinoceros and is also the only habitat of the endangered White Winged Wood Duck. Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park of Assam, which have been declared as the World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO are the two natural habitat of several endangered species of animals.
Digboi
Digboi is a township situated in the Tinsukia district of Assam. It is a treasure of the state and is popularly known as the ‘Oil City of Assam’. Digboi is renowned all over the globe as it houses the oldest oilfield of Asia and the oldest refinery of the World still in operation. The town has well-developed infrastructure that boasts of the 100 years old oil refinery. It is today the Headquarter of Assam Oil Division of Indian Oil Corporation Limited.
Powa Mecca
Powa Mecca is one of the most revered places of the followers of Muslim religion. It is situated in Hajo, a small hamlet of Assam situated on the banks of the River Brahmaputra. It is believed that if one cannot visit Mecca once during his lifetime owing to physical or financial conditions, the pilgrimage can be completed by visiting Powa Mecca four times.
Highest Tea Producing State
Assam is well-known for its tea and conquers the foremost position in production of tea in India. About 53% of India’s total tea production is done in the state of Assam and it also exports some of it to other parts of the World. The tea estates of the state together produce approximately 1.5 million pounds (680,400 kg) of tea every year. This is as well one reason that makes Assamese people proud of their state.

Assam has made India proud in various fields of Art, culture, literature and music. The soil of Assam has given birth to a lot of talented people like Bhupen Hazarika, Indira Goswami, Bhabendra Nath Saikia, Adil Hussain and lot many, brought glory not only to the state where these legends are born but also to India. The people of Assam are talented and have contributed remarkably towards the field of art, culture and literature of India.
Majuli
Assam houses the World’s largest riverine island, Majuli, which is formed by the Brahmaputra River in the south and the Kherkutia Xuti, a tributary of the River Brhamaputra united by the Subansiri River on the north. It is also the centre for Assamese culture and has preserved it with great care since ages. Majuli is without any doubt a gem of the state, which makes people proud of being born in the state of Assam.
