Nameri National Park

Assam, the most enchanting state situated in the North-eastern corner of India is well-known for its rich biodiversity as it serves as home to many wild animals, birds and reptiles. The state houses a number a wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, which attracts a huge crowd of tourists to the state from various parts of the globe. The state's wildlife sanctuaries and national parks are famous for being homes to one horned rhino and gibbons. Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park are the World heritage Sites declared by UNESCO. Apart from these, Nameri National Park, Orang National Park and Dibru Saikhowa National Park are also among the National Parks of the State that are worth visiting.

Also known as the “Last house of White Winged Wood Duck”, Nameri National Park is situated in the Sonitpur district of Assam. Sprawling over an area of 200 sq. km, it is the 3rd largest National Park of the state that shares its borders with the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is also the foundation area of Nameri Tiger Reserve adjoining the Pakhui (Pakke) Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh. With semi-evergreen, soggy deciduous forests of cane and bamboo, and a narrow strips of open grassland along rivers, it is an abode of over 300 species of birds, making it a haven for Ornithologists and birders. In the year 1978 it was given the status of forest reserve and only on 18 September 1985 it got the recognition of Wild Life Sanctuary. On 15 November 1998, about 75 sq.km was added to the total area and was established as a National Park. Situated on the bank of Jia Bhoroli River, which was known for the Golden Mahseer Angling during the British Rule, this National Park is still the home to Golden Mahseer.

This National Park is rich in flora and fauna and is the home to White Winged Wood Ducks, an endangered species. This species of bird is found only in Nameri and today, just 150 pair of this species is present in the whole World, and is only in Nameri National Park. Besides this, Blue-bearded Bee-eaters, Great Pied Hornbill, Black Stork, Babblers, Wreathed Hornbill, Ibis Bill, Plovers, Large Cormorant, Rufous Necked Hornbill, Littile Cormorant, Night Heron, Pond Heron, Redwattled Lapwing, Cotton Teal, Little Egret, Red Jungle Fowl, Pariah Kite, Magpie Robin, Green Pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon, Minivet, Horned Owl, Black headed Oriole, Nightjar,  hill Myna, Indian Roller, etc. are some of the species of avifauna found here.  Besides the birds, it is also a home to many mammalian species such as Gaur, Tiger, Jungle Cat, Leopard, Asian Elephant, Himalayan Black Bear, Civet Cat, Rhesus Macaque, Clouded Leopard, Barking Deer, Chinese Pangolin, Capped Langur, etc. Different species of reptiles such as King Cobra, Russels Viper, Python, Malayan Box Turtle, Rat Snake, Assam Roof Turtle, etc. can be sighted here.
